Second Sunday Talk:
- “Story of the New York Times Mural”
- “painted by American cartographer, Eugene Kingman (1909-1975), 2nd director of the Joslyn Art Museum”*
- Presented by Maureen McCann Waldron
-
The mural that Eugene Kingman painted (1946/1948) while living in Omaha is a view of what Earth would look like from Outer Space, before we had satellites images. It was commissioned for the New York Times.
The mural hung in the New York Times lobby for 40 years (1948-late 1980s). Badly needing a restoration, it was moved into storage. When the NYT offices moved, the mural moved as well, but not having been restored, it remained in storage. Within the last decade, a growing number of people in Omaha have worked to bring the mural home. After being restored, it now hangs in the Omaha Public Library in downtown Omaha.
The Second Sunday presentation will tell about the fantastic journey of the mural and the artist.
