- "Son of the Gamblin’ Man"
- by Mari Sandoz
This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations.
The story tells of the gambler and townsite promoter who founded Cozad, Nebraska, and of his family, particularly his younger son, [who] became a world-famous artist and teacher known as ‘Robert Henri.’ This tale is essentially Robert’s story, the story of a sensitive talented boy growing up in the midst of frontier violence. But it is also the story of the ambitious promoter and of frontier people fighting hunger, cold, blizzards, drouths, grasshoppers, prairie fires, and ruthless cattlemen. . .
“Excellent historical fiction. . . . Deeply interesting and decidedly worthwhile. Moreover, it adds another cubit to our understanding of the flowering of America’s heartland, a story of never-ending fascination.” —Victor P. Haas, New York Times Book Review

Second Sunday Talk:
- ““Two Gun’ Hart – Law Man, Cowboy, and Long Lost Brother of Al Capone”
- Presented by Lincoln native and California transplant, Jeff McArthur
-
Douglas County Historical Society's monthly program, Second Sunday Series, is proud to present the April installment entitled “Two Gun’ Hart: Law Man, Cowboy, and Long Lost Brother of Al Capone to be given by Lincoln native and California transplant, Jeff McArthur. The presentation will take place on Sunday, April 9 at 2 p.m. on Historic Fort Omaha in Metropolitan Community College's Building 10, located on the north end of campus.
Few know that Al Capone, the most famous gangster in the world, had a long-lost brother on the opposite side of the law. Born Vincenzo Capone in 1892, he ran away from home as a teenager, joined the circus, then the army, and returned from the Great War a hero. When Prohibition began in 1920, he became a Federal officer, and fought crime dressed as a cowboy with two six-shooters on his side while riding a horse.
Based in the small town of Homer, Nebraska, Hart covered territory throughout eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Working closely with such tribes as the Omaha, Winnebago, and Sioux; he became one of the most successful law men in the country. The entire time, neither his friends nor even his family knew of his connection to the infamous mob boss in Chicago.

- Douglas County Historical Society Reader's Circle:
- O Pioneers!
- by Willa Cather
This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations.
Set on the Nebraska prairie where Willa Cather (1873-1947) grew up, this powerful early novel tells the story of the young Alexandra Bergson, whose dying father leaves her in charge of the family and of the lands they have struggled to farm. In Alexandra's long flight to survive and succeed, O Pioneers! relates an important chapter in the history of the American frontier.
Evoking the harsh grandeur of the prairie, this landmark of American fiction unfurls a saga of love, greed, murder, failed dreams, and hard-won triumph. In the fateful interaction of her characters, Willa Cather compares with keen insight the experiences of Swedish, French, and Bohemian immigrants in the United States. And in her absorbing narrative, she displays the virtuoso storytelling skills that have made her one of the most admired masters of the American novel.

- Honoring Dian Moore Warren
This year's honoree is DCHS member Dian Moore Warren who is being recognized for her impact of her philanthropic work in our community. The Douglas County community is richer because of her work with arts and culture, the humanities, and human services.
Combined with the honoring of the award is the themed runway show, focusing on a certain time in fashion. This year's theme will be Grit and Glamour: Fashions of the 1940s. The intrigue of fashions during this time is best attributed to the context of global events. In the early half of the decade, the world was once again at war and the rationing of fabrics would alter the women's' silhouette.

- A Perfect Evil by Author: Alex Kava
This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations.
The brutal murders of three young boys paralyze the citizens of Platte City, Nebraska. What's worse is the grim realization that the man recently executed for the crimes was a copycat. When Sheriff Nick Morrelli is called to the scene of another grisly murder, it becomes clear that the real predator is still at large, waiting to kill again. Morrelli understands the urgency of the case terrorizing his community, but it's the experienced eye of FBI criminal profiler Maggie O'Dell that pinpoints the true nature of the evil behind the killings–a revelation made all the more horrific when Morrelli's own nephew goes missing. Maggie understands something else: the killer is enjoying himself, relishing his ability to stay one step ahead of her, making this case more personal by the hour. Because out there, watching, is a killer with a heart of pure and perfect evil.

July 2017
- Sunday, Jul. 9th, 2017 at 2-3 P.M. CDT:
- Douglas County Historical Society
Second Sunday Talk:
- “History of the Gold Coast”
- Presented by Joni Fogarty
-
Within the first few decades of its founding, Omaha transformed from a financially insecure, dirty, wide-open western town to a city struggling to advance by adopting the accouterments of a civilized society. One of the signs of this advancement was the creation of a neighborhood so grand that it spoke for itself – the homeowners were in no need of announcing their success. Today, that early neighborhood has been designation as the Gold Coast National Historic District. The beautiful architecture speaks to the success of many of Omaha's early business entrepreneurs and tells a story of early Omaha history that needs to be preserved and shared.

- The Ordinary Spaceman by Author: Clayton Anderson
This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations.
What's it like to travel at more than 850 MPH, riding in a supersonic T-38 twin turbojet engine airplane? What happens when the space station toilet breaks? How do astronauts “take out the trash” on a spacewalk, tightly encapsulated in a space suit with just a few layers of fabric and Kevlar between them and the unforgiving vacuum of outer space?
The Ordinary Spaceman puts you in the flight suit of U.S. astronaut Clayton C. Anderson and takes you on the journey of this small-town boy from Nebraska who spent 167 days living and working on the International Space Station, including more than forty hours of space walks. Having applied to NASA fifteen times over fifteen years to become an astronaut before his ultimate selection, Anderson offers a unique perspective on his life as a veteran space flier, one characterized by humility and perseverance.

- Last Night in the OR by Author: Bud Shaw
The 1980s marked a revolution in the field of organ transplants, and Bud Shaw, M.D., who studied under Tom Starzl in Pittsburgh, was on the front lines. Now retired from active practice, Dr. Shaw relays gripping moments of anguish and elation, frustration and reward, despair and hope in his struggle to save patients. He reveals harshly intimate moments of his medical career: telling a patient's husband that his wife has died during surgery; struggling to complete a twenty-hour operation as mental and physical exhaustion inch closer and closer; and flying to retrieve a donor organ while the patient waits in the operating room. Within these more emotionally charged vignettes are quieter ones, too, like growing up in rural Ohio, and being awakened late at night by footsteps in the hall as his father, also a surgeon, slipped out of the house to attend to a patient in the ER.

Wednesday, Oct. 25th, 2017 (Last Wednesday of month):
- Douglas County Historical Society Reader's Circle:
- The Kid by Author: Creighton graduate, Robert Hansen
Born Henry McCarty, Billy the Kid was a diminutive, charming, blond-haired young man who, growing up in New York, Kansas, and later New Mexico, demonstrated a precocious dexterity at firing six-shooters with either hand-a skill that both got him into and out of trouble and that turned him into an American legend of the old West. He was smart, well-spoken, attractive to both white and Mexican women, a good dancer, and a man with a nose for money, horses, and trouble. His spree of crimes and murders has been immortalized in dime westerns, novels, and movies. But the whole story of his short, epically violent life has never been told as it has been here.
In The Kid, Ron Hansen showcases his masterful research and inimitable style as he breathes life into history, bringing readers back into the late 1800s and into Billy's boyhood as a ranch hand just trying to wrest a fortune from an unforgiving landscape.
