- Douglas County Historical Society Second Sunday Talk:
- A Panel Discussion Featuring Cedric Hartman, Mark Mercer, Nicholas Bonham-Carter and Judy Wigton
- The Old Market district was once home to a wholesale jobbing area which flourished in the 1880s and continued well into the twentieth century. The area is now home to renovated brick warehouses, quaint storefronts, old-fashioned lampposts and uneven brick streets. Join us as our panel discusses this historic district from its origins through the revitalization that made it the destination we know today. The talk is presented by the Douglas County Historical Society with funding provided by the Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Memorial Foundation.

- The Legend of Hummel Park and Other Stories by Jeremy Morong
- Our first book will be "The Legend of Hummel Park and Other Stories" by Jeremy Morong. Morong has taken those tales as a jumping off point for his own short stories.
- Copies of Morong's book will be available in the gift shop of the Crook House Museum before the start of Reader's Circle.
- Time: 12 P.M. to 1 P.M. CST at Douglas County Historical Society

- Douglas County Historical Society Second Sunday Talk:
- Omaha's Jobbers Canyon
The development of Jobber's Canyon exemplified Omaha's emergence as a central hub in the U.S. transportation system in the early 20th century. In 1989, 24 buildings in the historic district were demolished to make room for the ConAgra corporate headquarters. This sparked national front page coverage, protests, and federal court battles.
Join us for a panel discussion on the area's history as well as the efforts to save it from the wrecking ball.

- Three Bodies Burning by Brian Bogdanoff
- Our book will be "Three Bodies Burning" by Brian Bogdanoff. Three Bodies Burning is the story of a haunting triple murder and the inside story of the investigation. When two worlds collide-the illegal transportation of tons of Mexican cartel marijuana to inner city gang members in a Midwestern city's "hood"-three bodies end up burning, caught in a web of greed as a major international drug deal goes very bad. The chilling trail of evidence from a remote wooded area where three bodies are set on fire leads homicide detectives across the country chasing down witnesses and conspirators in a two-year search for cold-blooded killers.

- I Am A Man by Joe Starita
- Our book will be "I Am A Man" by Joe Starita. "I Am a Man" chronicles what happened when Standing Bear set off on a six-hundred-mile walk to return the body of his only son to their traditional burial ground. Along the way, it examines the complex relationship between the United States government and the small, peaceful tribe and the legal consequences of land swaps and broken treaties, while never losing sight of the heartbreaking journey the Ponca endured. It is a story of survival---of a people left for dead who arose from the ashes of injustice, disease, neglect, starvation, humiliation, and termination.

- Ahead of Their Time: The Story of the Omaha DePorres Club by Matt Holland author from Douglas County
- Our book will be "Ahead of Their Time: The Story of the Omaha DePorres Club" by Matt Holland. Before Civil Rights heroes like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King made their courageous stands, before the creation of the iconic images that represent the struggle against racism in the United States - before there even was a Civil Rights Movement - there was the story of the Omaha DePorres Club. Author Matt Holland recounts the events that led to the creation of the Omaha DePorres Club and traces the arc of the club's evolution from 1947 to 1960 - revealing the courage and camaraderie of club members as well as the challenges, fears and failures they faced as they ventured into the uncharted territory of the early Civil Rights Movement.

- This month's book will be Omaha Gold: A Story of the Transcontinental Railroad by Lawson McDowell. Lawson McDowell's popular novel uses historical fiction for a retelling of the story of America's first transcontinental railroad and its less-celebrated dark back-story. The enduring account of Lincoln's Union Pacific Railroad is told in two storylines: one from the present, the other from America's pioneer days, linked by an American tyrant's lost gold.

- This month's book will be The Rhythm Boys of Omaha Central: High School Basketball at the '68 Racial Divide by Steve Marantz. In the spring of 1968, the Omaha Central High School basketball team made history with its first all-black starting lineup. Their nickname, The Rhythm Boys, captured who they were and what they did on the court. Led by star center Dwaine Dillard, the Rhythm Boys were a shoo-in to win the state championship. But something happened on their way to glory. In early March, segregationist George Wallace, in a third-party presidential bid, made a campaign stop in Omaha. By the time he left towm, Dillard was in jail, his coach was caught between angry political factions, and the city teetered on the edge of racial violence. So began the Nebraska state high school basketball tournament the next day, caught in the vise of history. The Rhythm Boys of Omaha Central tells a true story about high school basketball, black awakening and rebellion, and innocence lost in a watershed year. The drama of civil rights in 1968 plays out in this riveting social history of sports, politics, race, and popular culture in the American heartland.

- The Middle Five: Indian Schoolboys of the Omaha Tribe by author: Francis La Flesche
- The Middle Five, first published in 1900, is an account of Francis La Flesche's life as a student in a Presbyterian mission school in northeastern Nebraska about the time of the Civil War. It is a simple, affecting tale of young Indian boys midway between two cultures, reluctant to abandon the ways of their fathers, and puzzled and uncomfortable in their new roles of "make-believe-white-men."
- The ambition of the Indian parents for their children, the struggle of the teachers to acquaint their charges with a new world of learning, and especially the problems met by both parents and teachers in controlling and directing schoolboy exuberance contribute to the authenticity of this portrait of the "Universal Boy," to whom La Flesche dedicated his book.
- Regarded by anthropologists as a classic of Native American literature, it is one of those rare books that are valued by the specialist as authentic sources of information about Indian culture and yet can be recommended wholeheartedly to the general reader.

- Scoreless by John Dechant
- This month's book will be Scoreless by John Dechant. In October 1960, Omaha Central and Creighton Prep met for what many Nebraskans consider the greatest high school football game ever played. Future NFL Hall of Famer Gale Sayers scored seventy points while leading Central's powerful offense through its first four games. Prep's strong defense, on the other hand, allowed only twenty points all season. Legendary coaches patrolled both sidelines, and Prep was aiming for its third straight state championship. The stage was set for a Friday-night showdown.
- Scoreless retells the details of this legendary game, the buildup to it, and the story behind the teams and their renowned coaches and players. It is the tale of one of the most remarkable football games in Nebraska high school sports history.
