Douglas County Historical Society's monthly program, Second Sunday Series, is proud to present the April installment entitled “Two Gun’ Hart: Law Man, Cowboy, and Long Lost Brother of Al Capone to be given by Lincoln native and California transplant, Jeff McArthur. The presentation will take place on Sunday, April 9 at 2 p.m. on Historic Fort Omaha in Metropolitan Community College's Building 10, located on the north end of campus.
Few know that Al Capone, the most famous gangster in the world, had a long-lost brother on the opposite side of the law. Born Vincenzo Capone in 1892, he ran away from home as a teenager, joined the circus, then the army, and returned from the Great War a hero. When Prohibition began in 1920, he became a Federal officer, and fought crime dressed as a cowboy with two six-shooters on his side while riding a horse.
Based in the small town of Homer, Nebraska, Hart covered territory throughout eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Working closely with such tribes as the Omaha, Winnebago, and Sioux; he became one of the most successful law men in the country. The entire time, neither his friends nor even his family knew of his connection to the infamous mob boss in Chicago.

This year's honoree is DCHS member Dian Moore Warren who is being recognized for her impact of her philanthropic work in our community. The Douglas County community is richer because of her work with arts and culture, the humanities, and human services.
Combined with the honoring of the award is the themed runway show, focusing on a certain time in fashion. This year's theme will be Grit and Glamour: Fashions of the 1940s. The intrigue of fashions during this time is best attributed to the context of global events. In the early half of the decade, the world was once again at war and the rationing of fabrics would alter the women's' silhouette.

Within the first few decades of its founding, Omaha transformed from a financially insecure, dirty, wide-open western town to a city struggling to advance by adopting the accouterments of a civilized society. One of the signs of this advancement was the creation of a neighborhood so grand that it spoke for itself – the homeowners were in no need of announcing their success. Today, that early neighborhood has been designation as the Gold Coast National Historic District. The beautiful architecture speaks to the success of many of Omaha's early business entrepreneurs and tells a story of early Omaha history that needs to be preserved and shared.

By sharing stories of families and individuals from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, Vietnam, and many others, Mary Pipher, an anthropologist, psychologist, and bestselling author, offers insight into the challenges and hardships faced by survivors who land in the middle of nowhere. Pipher describes how refugees are placed in American, specifically in her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska where her interviewees now reside. In these stories of refugees, Pipher reveals that evolving demographics of Lincoln and how quickly this middle-American city, once a land of diversity of European descent, is becoming home to those fleeing the fires in other lands.

- Last Night in the OR by Author: Bud Shaw
The 1980s marked a revolution in the field of organ transplants, and Bud Shaw, M.D., who studied under Tom Starzl in Pittsburgh, was on the front lines. Now retired from active practice, Dr. Shaw relays gripping moments of anguish and elation, frustration and reward, despair and hope in his struggle to save patients. He reveals harshly intimate moments of his medical career: telling a patient's husband that his wife has died during surgery; struggling to complete a twenty-hour operation as mental and physical exhaustion inch closer and closer; and flying to retrieve a donor organ while the patient waits in the operating room. Within these more emotionally charged vignettes are quieter ones, too, like growing up in rural Ohio, and being awakened late at night by footsteps in the hall as his father, also a surgeon, slipped out of the house to attend to a patient in the ER.

- Reader's Circle will focus on authors from Douglas County. The club will meet monthly, at noon at the Crook House Museum. We have a casual and intimate roundtable discussion, where the audience has the opportunity to get up close and personal with the authors. Each program concludes with a book signing and time to meet one-on-one with the featured author.

Born Henry McCarty, Billy the Kid was a diminutive, charming, blond-haired young man who, growing up in New York, Kansas, and later New Mexico, demonstrated a precocious dexterity at firing six-shooters with either hand-a skill that both got him into and out of trouble and that turned him into an American legend of the old West. He was smart, well-spoken, attractive to both white and Mexican women, a good dancer, and a man with a nose for money, horses, and trouble. His spree of crimes and murders has been immortalized in dime westerns, novels, and movies. But the whole story of his short, epically violent life has never been told as it has been here.
In The Kid, Ron Hansen showcases his masterful research and inimitable style as he breathes life into history, bringing readers back into the late 1800s and into Billy's boyhood as a ranch hand just trying to wrest a fortune from an unforgiving landscape.
